Let $x$ be the missing number,
then $84 + x = 2.1$
$\Rightarrow8.4\times\frac{1}{\text{x}}=2.1$
$\big[\because\text{reciprocal of}\ \text{x}=\frac{1}{\text{x}}\big]$
$\Rightarrow8.4=2.1\text{x}$ [by cross-multiplication]
$\Rightarrow\text{x}=\frac{8.4}{2.1}$
$\Rightarrow \text{x}=\frac{84}{21}\times\frac{10}{10}=4$
$\Rightarrow\text{x}=4$
