Let the required number = x
And half of the number $=\frac{\text{x}}{2}$
Then, $\frac{\text{x}}{2}+\text{x}=72$
$\Rightarrow\frac{\text{x}+2\text{x}}{2}=72$
$\Rightarrow\frac{3\text{x}}{2}=72$
$\therefore\text{x}=\frac{72\times2}{3}=24\times2=48$
$\therefore$ Required number = 48
And half of the number $=\frac{\text{x}}{2}$
Then, $\frac{\text{x}}{2}+\text{x}=72$
$\Rightarrow\frac{\text{x}+2\text{x}}{2}=72$
$\Rightarrow\frac{3\text{x}}{2}=72$
$\therefore\text{x}=\frac{72\times2}{3}=24\times2=48$
$\therefore$ Required number = 48
