Question
A rectangular grassy plot is $112m$ long and $78m$ broad. It has a gravel path $2.5m$ wide all around it on the side. Find the area of the path and the cost of constructing it at $Rs. 4.50$ per square metre.

Answer

Length of rectangular plot $(l) = 112m$
and breadth $(b) = 78m$
Width of parth $= 2.5m$
Inner length $= 112 - 2 \times 2.5 = 112 - 5 = 107m$
and inner breadth $= 78 - 2 \times 2.5 = 78 - 5 = 73m$
Area of path = outer area - inner area
$ =(112 \times 78-107 \times 73) \mathrm{m}^2=8736-7811=925 \mathrm{~m}^2$
$\text { Rate ofconstructing }=\text { Rs. } 4.50 \text { per } \mathrm{m}^2 $
Total cost $= 925 \times Rs. 4.50 = Rs. 4162.50$
