Helping Hands
After the recess, we were chatting and fighting in the class as usual, when all of a sudden we heard the loud squeal of brakes and some shouts. Now, our classroom is very close to the main road and we knew that the noise had come from this road. Had there been an accident?
We got up and ran out. A young woman, holding two children by the hand and carrying a huge bag of vegetables, had fallen on the road right in front of a bus. The children had also fallen and the vegetables were scattered all over the road. The bus driver had poked his head out of the window and was shouting at the poor lady. My friends and I ran out of the gate to help. We first brought the little children to the safety of the school compound. Then we went back to help the mother. She had nearly fainted with shock but recovered when we gave her some water. We quickly picked up whatever vegetables we could and stuffed them back into her bag. To our great surprise, neither the passengers from the bus nor the driver got down to help.
By this time some of our teachers too had come out to help. The matter was soon settled and the poor woman went on her way, thanking us profusely and leaving us with a warm feeling in our hearts.
