Question
An object is 24cm away from a concave mirror and its image is 16cm from the mirror. Find the focal length and radius of curvature of the mirror, and the magnification of the image.

Answer

u = -24cm
v = -16cm
f = ?, m = ?
We know that
$\frac{1}{\text{v}}+\frac{1}{\text{u}}=\frac{1}{\text{f}}$
$\frac{1}{-16}+\frac{1}{-24}=\frac{1}{\text{f}}$
$\frac{-5}{48}=\frac{1}{\text{f}}$
$\text{R}=2\text{f}$
$=2\times-9.6=-19.2\text{cm}$
$\text{m}=-\frac{\text{v}}{\text{u}}$
$\text{m}=-\frac{-16}{-24}$
$\text{m}=-0.666$

Make a circuit by connecting the two terminals of the electric cell to the key as shown in the fig. 5.13. Place the compass needle close to it. Note carefully the direction in which the compass needle is pointing, close the key for few seconds. Release the key and watch again. Repeat the steps again by changing its polarity. Record the observations.

If heat is exchanged between a hot and cold object, the temperature of the cold object goes on increasing due to gain of energy and the temperature of the hot object goes on decreasing due to loss of energy.
The change in temperature continues till the temperatures of both the objects attain the same value. In this process, the cold object gains heat energy and the hot object loses heat energy. If the system of both the objects is isolated from the environment by keeping it inside a heat resistant box, then no energy can flow from inside the box or come into the box.
