(b) Sound in air is propagated only by means of longitudinal waves. In a solid such as a metal rod sound can be transmitted by longitudinal waves. In Kundt's tube longitudinal sound waves will be produced in a metal rod. Using the properties of the wave motion the frequency of sound and speed of sound in the rod can be determined. While Melde's apparatus is used to determine the frequency of tuning fork, and interference of sound is illustrated using a Quincke's interference tube.
