Morgan experimentally verified the chromosomal theory of inheritance which led to discovering the basis for the variation that sexual reproduction produced Morgan worked on tiny fruit flies-Drosophila melanogaster which were suitable for such studies. Morgan also formulated the chromosomal theory of linkage and also discovered the sex linkage by carrying out several dihybrid crosses in Drosophila to study sex linked genes.
