Question
Bring out the role of vasopressin (ADH) in kidney functioning.

Answer

Vasopressin in kidney functioning:
  • Vasopressin is released from the neurohypophysis, when there is excess loss of water from the body.
  • ADH stimulates the distal convoluted tubule, collecting tubule and collecting duct to reabsorb water from the filtrate and thereby prevents loss of water in the urine.
  • ADH/ vasopressin also stimulates constriction of blood vessels and causes an increase in blood pressure; this increased blood pressure can increase the glomerular blood flow and glomerular filtration rate.
