(i) A covalent compound in which shared pairs of electrons are equally distributed between the combining atoms is called a non-polar covalent compound. For example, molecule of methane has non-polar covalent bonds between the carbon and hydrogen atoms. (ii) A covalent compound in which shared pairs of electrons are not equally distributed is called polar covalent compound. HCl gas and H2S are the examples of polar covalent compounds.
