Testis : The testis are one pair, ovoid structures enclosed in sac-like structures—the scrotal sacs or scrotum. The testis and scrotal sacs lie outside the body cavity near the penis. The scrotal sac is composed of body wall and communicates with the body cavity by a narrow canal the inguinal canal. Through the inguinal canal passes spermatic cord which is composed of connective tissue, artery, vein and a nerve each. Vas deferens also passes through inguinal canal.
Penis : The
penis is a cylindrical organ which usually hangs in front of the scrotum.
The penis is composed of two
corpora cavernosa on the front side and one corpus spongiosum around the urethra (Fig.).
Corpus spongiosum is enlarged near the tip of the
penis to form
glans penis. The skin which surrounds the glans penis is loose and retractile. It is called prepuce or
foreskin. The urethra communicates with the exterior by an aperture situated at the tip of the
penis.
Accessory Sex GlandsThese include mainly the following glands :
(i) Prostate glands
(ii) Seminal vesicles
(iii) Cowper’s glands
(iv) Perineal glands
(v) Rectal glands
(i) Prostate Glands : These are situated over the seminal vesicle and also in the dorsolateral region. It comprises of three or four lobes. These glands open into urinogenital duct by several small ductules. These secrete a
white fluid which is alkaline in nature and is believed to be very useful for the sperms. Its secretion nourishes the spermatozoa.
(ii) Seminal Vesicles : These are situated between urinary bladder and rectum. These are long, sacculated musculoglandular organs. These secrete a fluid which activate the sperms. These do not store the spermatozoa as believed earlier.
(iii) Cowper’s Glands : These are situated beneath the prostate glands. They secrete a mucoid fluid at the time of copulation and throw it into the urethra.
(iv) Perineal Glands : These are also paired and discharge their contents of specific odour into perineal pouches situated between penis and anus.
(v) Rectal Glands : These are yellow coloured glands situated near rectum. Their secretion also has a specific odour.
