Describe in detail the structure of a nephron.

  • A nephron has two parts, namely (i) the glomerulus and (ii) the renal tubule.
  • The glomerulus is a tuft of capillaries formed by the afferent arteriole; it is located in the hollow of the Bowman's capsule.
  • The renal tubule has three parts:
  1. Proximal convoluted tubule.
  2. Loop of Henle.
  3. Distal convoluted tubule.
  • The proximal renal tubule is closed at the proximal end; it is expanded to form a double-walled cupshaped structure, called Bowman's capsule.
  • It continues to form a highly convoluted proximal convoluted tubule.
  • The loop of Henle arises from the end of the proximal convoluted tubule, with a descending limb and an ascending limb.
  • The distal renal tubule, begins as the distal convoluted tubule and continues as a collecting tubule that joins the collecting duct.
  1. Each collecting duct receives the collecting tubules of many nephrons.
  2. The collecting ducts converge, run through the renal pyramids and open into the renal pelvis through renal papillae.
