Question
Describe the mechanism of plasticity in plants with suitable examples.

Answer

Plasticity refers to a phenomenon in which plants follow different pathways in response to environment or phases of life forming different kinds of structures, e.g., heterophylly, the phenomenon in plants by which more than two types of leaves occur on the same plant. The heterophylly is common in cotton, coriander larkspur and Ivy. The environmental plasticity is best seen in emergent hydrophytes, e.g., Ranunculus flabellaris (buttercup).

In this, the submerged leaves are highly dissected, while emerged leaves are broad and lobed.

Similarly as larkspur the juvenile leaves are broadly lobed, white mature leaves become pinnately divided with lobes becoming linear in the region of flowers.
