Question
Describe the structure and function of a renal corpuscle.

Answer

Renal corpuscle:
  • The renal tubule or the nephron begins as a double walled cup-like structure, called Bowman's capsule.
  • The hollow of the cup is occupied by glomerulus, the a capillary network formed by the afferent arteriole.
  • The Bowman's capsule alongwith the glomerulus, is known as Malpighian or renal corpuscle.
  • The blood flowing through the glomerulus is filtered, which is the first step in urine formation.
  • The filtration membrane is formed by (i) the endothelium of glomerular capillaries, (ii) the epithelium of Bowman's capsule and (iii) the basement membrane between the above two.
  • The filtrate passes into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule and then reaches the proximal convoluted tubule.
