Stages or Process of communication : The process of communication can be explained through the following figure:
Stages of Communication process:
(1) Speaker/Sender/Transmitter: First of all, speaker has a thought to share and then he decides who to share it with and which words to choose to describe one’s feelings, thoughts etc. The person who initiates the process of communication is known as speaker.
(2) Encoding : The process undertaken by the speaker to arranged/change the concept/idea usnig appropriate language, diction, sound, medium. So, that the receiver, individual or group can sense communication.
(3) Message : The speaker employs various devices, tools, means and medium properly formulates concept/idea which is called information message. Words and Phrases having more than one meaning should be used carefully as it may act as a barrier to proper communication.
(4) Channel/Medium : The devices or tools such as language, pictures, sound or letters used to transmit information/message are called medium. The speaker should select carefully between oral and written communication.
(5) Listener/Receiver : The message cannot be understood until and unless it is received by the Listener/Receiver. So, the stage of decoding comes after Listener/Receiver. (Note The serial number is different in the textbook).
After sending the message it should be received at appropriate time. Otherwise it would be considered as a failure of communication. The process of communication is undertaken in mind of the receiver.
(6) Decoding : The process of understanding the coded information/message that the speaker/ sender has sent. Using particular form tools/medium is called decoding. If the receiver is unable to decode the message properly, he will not be able to give feedback properly. Receiver should understand the same message what sender intends to say.
(7) Feedback : After Receiver receives the message and understands it appropriately, he gives his feedback or takes desirable steps as mentioned in message. Feedback from the receiver is very important as it determines the success of the process. This is the last stage of process of communication.
6. Conclusion: If the process of communication is undertaken properly then only it can fulfill the aim of both the parties. i.e. Sender and Receiver. Incomplete information and unclear word are the barriers of communication and they might fail the process of communication.
