Question
Diphenyls are potential threat to the environment. How are these produced from arylhalides?

Answer

Diphenyl can be prepared by treating two molecules of aryl halide with two molecules of sodium in presence of dry ether. The reaction is called Wurtz-fittig reaction.

i.e. $2\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{X}+2\text{Na}\cdots\text{dry ether}\xrightarrow{ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }\text{C}_6\text{H} _5-\text{C}_6\text{H}_5+2\text{Na}\text{X}$
