Buddhism gave great importance to self effort, discipline and meditation in ‘nibbana'. The important features of Mahayana Buddhism was the idea of saviour represented by Bodhisattas.
The salient features of Mahayana Buddhism was the idea of saviour as represented by Bodhisatta.
Bodhisattas were perceived as deeply compassionate beings that accumulated merit through their efforts, but not to attain nibbana and thereby abandon the world, but to help others. Thus, it can be explained that the worship of images of Bodhisattas also became an important part of the tradition of Mahayana Buddhism.
