Construction: A magnetic compass is a small cylindrical box made of either aluminium or brass. There is a circulor disc marked with directions. A magnetic needle is pivoted on a vertical axis in such a manner that it can rotate freely in the horizontal plane. The case is covered by a glass cover. Working: The magnetic compass is rotated in the horizontal plane in such a manner that the North pole of the needle comes on the letter N marked in the compass. Now, the directions shown by the compass are the true directions.
