Prior to the discovery of metal, and even after the discovery of metal, most articles made from clay were in use in day-to-day life.

  • The origin of the clay work is found in the invention of potter's wheel. It was used for making various articles in ancient India. The potter's wheel was the first tool used in ancient India.
  • The potters in ancient India made toys, pots, pitchers, earthen lamps, clay stove, clay wares for storing grains, milk, ghee, curd and buttermilk.
  • Maximum kitchen-wares were made from clay. Many clay utensils of red clay discovered at Lothal. Mohen-jo-Daro and Harappa belong to the Indus Valley Civilization.

  • The walls of houses and huts were plastered with the paste made by mixing clay with cowdung. →India was famous for making utensils of baked as well as unbaked clay (terracotta). The remains of these utensils have been found at Nagarjuna Kaunda in South India and at Laghnaj in Mahesana district of Gujarat.

  • During the Garbas in Navratri festival pitchers having holes and having lamp inside are used even today in Gujarat as a mark of respect to tradition.
