Question
Explain $\left[ CO \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{3+}$ is an inner orbital complex whereas $\left[ Ni \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{2+}$ is an outer orbital complex.

Answer

In $\left[ CO \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{3+}$, oxidation state of $CO =+3$ Electronic configuration $=3 d ^6$
In presence of $NH _3, 3 d$ electrons pair up leaving two d-orbitais empty. Hence, the hybridisation is $d ^2 p ^2$ forming an inner orbital complex. In $\left[ Ni \left( NH _3\right)_6\right]^{2+}$.
Oxidation state $=+2$, Electronic Configuration $=3 d ^8$. In the presence of $NH _3$, 3d electrons do not pair up. The hybridisation involved is, $s ^3 d ^2$ and it forms an outer orbital complex.
