Question
Explain the concept of Differential Limit.
✓
Answer
Differential threshold is the minimum amount of change in a physical stimulus that is capable of producing a sensation difference on 50% of the trials.
e.g. go on adding sugar granules one after another tasting the water each time. After addition of a few granules, we will notice at a point that the water is now sweeter than the previous one.
The numbers of sugar granules added to the water to generate an experience of sweetness that is different from the previous sweetness on 50% of the occasions will be called the DIFFERNTIAL THRESHOLD of sweetness.
Our ability to detect differences in stimulus intensity depends on the magnitude of the initial nature of stimulus and other organic and motivational states. Like detecting change in one's favourite tunes at a low sound intensity is easier than at loud music. Hence, we have to assess it on the basis of DIFFERNTIAL THRESHOLD found on 50% of times on the number of trials.
