Question
Explain the difference between two- dimensional and three-dimensional motion by giving examples.

Answer

Two-dimensional motion: The motion of a body on a curved path in a plane is called two-dimensional motion.
For example, the motion of a particle on a circular path in a plane, the motion of an ant on paper, the motion of vehicles on road, the motion of a projectile in a vertical palne. Two coordinate axis are required to describe two-dimensional motion.
Three-dimensional motion: The motion of a particle in space is called three-dimensional motion. To describe this motion, three coordinate axes perpendicular to each other are required. For example, the speed of a fly, the speed of a kite when there is strong wind.

Torques of equal magnitude are applied to hollow cylinder and a solid sphere both having the same mass and radius. The cylinder is free to rotate about its standard axis of symmetry, and the sphere is free to rotate about an axis passing through its centre. Which of the two will acquire a greater angular speed?
Two electric trains run at the same speed of $72km/h$ along the same track and in the same direction with a separation of $2.4km$ between them. The two trains simultaneously sound brief whistles. A person is situated at a perpendicular distance of 500m from the track and is equidistant from the two trains at the instant of the whistling. If both the whistles were at $500Hz$ and the speed of sound in air is $340m/s$, find the frequencies heard by the person.
