Question
Explain the following types of substances with one suitable example, for each case:
  1. Cationic detergents.
  2. Food preservatives.
  3. Analgesics.

Answer

  1. Cationic Detergents: Cationic detergents are quarternary ammonium salts of amines with acetates/chlorides/bromides as anions eg: Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide.
  2. Food preservatives: are the compounds which prevent spoilage of food due to microbial growth. eg: sodium benzoate, vinegar.
  3. Analgesics: reduce or abolish pain without causing impairment of consciousness, mental confusion, incoordination or paralysis or some other disturbances of nervous system eg: aspirin, morphine, codeine.

The well known mineral fluorite is chemically calcium fluoride. It is known that in one unit cell of this mineral there are $4 \mathrm{Ca}^{2+}$ ions and $8 \mathrm{F}^{-}$ions and that $\mathrm{Ca}^{2+}$ ions are arranged in a fcc lattice. The $\mathrm{F}^{-}$ions fill all the tetrahedral holes in the face centred cubic lattice of $\mathrm{Ca}^{2+}$ ions. The edge of the unit cell is $5.46 \times 10^{-8} \mathrm{~cm}$ in length. The density of the solid is $3.18 \mathrm{~g} \mathrm{~cm}^{-3}$. Use this information to calculate Avogadro's number $($Molar mass of $\mathrm{CaF}_2=78.08 \mathrm{~g} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1} ).$
