Explain the structure of carboxyl group.

In carboxyl group, the carboxyl carbon is $sp ^2$-hybridised and the bonds to the carboxyl carbon lie in one plane. The $C - C = O$ and $O = C - O$ bond angles are $120^{\circ}$. The carboxylic carbon is less electrophilic than carbonyl carbon because of the resonance structures shown below :
