The work of river as an agent of denudation led to the formation of various landforms which are given below. The following points explain the erosional work of river
→ Waterfall When the river fall down suddenly at steep angle over very hard rocks or down a steep valley side, it forms a waterfall.
→ Meander It is a large bend formed by twisting and turning of the river, while it enters the plain.
→ Ox-bow Lake With the continuous erosion and deposition along the sides of the meander, the ends of the meander loop come closer. When the meander loop cuts-off from the river, it forms a cut-off lake, which is called an ox-box lake.
→ Flood Plains When the river overflows its banks, it leads to the flooding of the neighbouring areas. During this flooding, the river deposits layers of fine soil and other material (sediments) along its banks. This leads to the formation of a flat fertile which is called flood plain.
→ Levees The raised banks of the rivers formed due to their overflow are called levees.
