Question
Explain, why Lassaigne's solution is boiled with conc. $\mathrm{HNO}_3$ before testing for halogens?

Answer

It is done so as to decompose NaCN to HCN and $\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{S}$ to $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{S}$ which are removed as gases otherwise they will interfere with the tests for halogens.
