Biosynthesized beta carotene (pro-vitamin A) is found in abundance in golden rice. In 2005, another variety of golden rice was developed which contains 23 times more beta carotene. Pro. Ingo Potrikas and Dr. Peter Baer developed this genetically engineered rice variety 'Golden Rice'. Beta carotene is the precursor substance of vitamin 'A'.
