Let x be the third proportional, then
$8 : 12 : : 12 : \text{x}$
$\Rightarrow8\times\text{x}=12\times12$
$\Rightarrow\text{x}=\frac{12\times12}{8}=18$
$\therefore$ Third proportional = 18
