Let the third proportional to $a^2-b^2$ and $a + b$ be $n$
$\Rightarrow a^2-b^2, a+b$ and $n$ are in continued proportion
$\Rightarrow a^2-b^2: a+b=a_b: n$
$ \Rightarrow n=\frac{(a+b h)^2}{a^2-b^2}=\frac{(a+b)^2}{(a+b)(a-b)}=\frac{a+b}{a-b}$
