Question
Five solutions A, B, C, D and E, when tested with universal indicator showed pH as 4, 1, 11, 7 and 9 respectively. Which solution is...
(a) neutral?  (b) strongly alkaline?  (c) strongly  acidic ?  (d) weakly acidic?  (e) weakly alkaline?
Arrange the pH in increasing order of hydrogen-ion concentration.

Answer

(i) (a) Solution 'D' is neutral, as its pH value is 7.
(b) Solution 'C' is strongly alkaline, as its pH value is 11 (Highest pH).
(c) Solution 'B' is strongly acidic as its pH value is 1 (Lowest pH).
(d) Solution 'A' is weakly acidic as its pH value is 4.
(e) Solution 'E' is weakly alkaline as its pH value is 9.
(ii) Increasing order of $H ^{+}$ion concentration based on the pH values is as follows :
pH : $11<9<7<4<1$
Concentration of $H ^{+}$ion $=\left[ H ^{+}( aq )\right]$ : $10^{-11} M <10^{-9} M <10^{-7} M <10^{-4} M <10^{-1} M$
Solution : $C < E < D < A < B$
