Question
Formaldehyde gives Cannizzaro's reaction while acetaldehyde does not. Why?

Answer

Formaldehyde does not have an $\alpha$-hydrogen. There fore it takes part in Cannizzaro's reaction when heated with strong NaOH to form a methyl alcohol and sodium formate mixture. Acetaldehyde fails to react since it has $\alpha$-hydrogen.
