Gramsevak has to act as a purposeful worker as a helper and carrier of rural development and change.
Gramsevak is now known as 'Village Development Officer'.
The main functions of a Gram Sevak are as follows:
To act as an intermediary between the officials of the Departments of Agriculture, Education, Co-operation, Animal Husbandry, Health etc. and the villagers involved with the rural developers.
To implement the plans and programs decided by the Gram Sevak as well as to discuss with the people of the villages under his jurisdiction and prepare a plan for the development of agriculture, irrigation, co-operation etc. in each village.
Gramsevak to study the needs of the villagers and try to meet them.
To acquaint the villagers with new discoveries and new knowledge and to inform the superiors about the questions, suggestions and problems of the villagers.
To hold a meeting of villagers under panchayats, co-operative societies etc. and to encourage the villagers to discuss issues related to agriculture, animal husbandry, co-operation, health, education etc.
To provide seeds, fertilizer etc. to the villagers.
Thus, the gram sevak is responsible to the sarpanch in the gram panchayat and on the other hand to the taluka development officer at the taluka level.
