  • It’s demand has increased after the industrial revolution.
  • Iron ore is smelted with coal and lime and converted into pig iron.
  • When we remove carbon from pig iron we get cast iron.
  • Steel made from iron is used widely for construction, machinery, transportation and weapons.
  • Largest iron deposits are found in North America and Europe.
  • Brazil comes first and India comes second in higher quality iron ore.
  • The first blast furnace to melt iron ore was established in $1911$ at Jamshedpur in Bihar.
  • Iron ore is found mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgadh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Tamilnadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
  • Nearly 50% of the iron ore is exported to Japan, Korea, European and Gulf countries.
  • This export is mainly done from Vishakhapattanam, Paradip and Mangalore ports.
