Question
Give scientific reason:
Anodes need to be replaced from time to time during the electrolysis of alumina.

Answer

i. During the electrolysis of alumina, oxygen gas is liberated at the anode.
ii. Oxygen reacts with the graphite anode to form carbon dioxide.
iii. The mass of graphite rods decreases over the time. Hence, the anodes have to be changed from time to time as they get oxidised during the electrolysis of alumina.
