The author felt uncomfortable with the attention he received in his new school after the fire incident. Though teachers and classmates showed sympathy and concern, he found it embarrassing. Their pitying looks made him feel as if he was responsible for his situation. He said, “This was not the kind of attention I was looking for.” He longed for normalcy, respect, and acceptance rather than sympathy. However, over time, he realised that the love and support he got were genuine and selfless. This changed his perspective and helped him overcome his emotional pain.
