Variations may arise due to small inaccuracies in DNA copying during reproduction; as a result of sexual reproduction where genetic materials from two different organisms combine to form a new organism.
During adverse conditions, some variations may give survival advantage to the organism.
e.g. a population of bacteria living in temperate waters. If the temperature of water increases suddenly then most of the bacteria would die but few variant bacteria resistant to heat would survive and grow further.
