Question
How does electrolysis of molten NaCl occurs?

Answer

Molten NaCl contains only $Na ^{+}$and $Cl ^{-}$ions, hence $Na ^{+}$is reduced at the cathode to form Na and $Cl ^{-}$at the anode get oxidised to form $Cl _2$.
At cathode: $2 Na ^{+}+2 e ^{-} \rightarrow 2 Na _{( s )}$
At anode : $\quad 2 Cl ^{-}-2 e ^{-} \rightarrow Cl _2(g)$
