Question
How is chlorine obtained from rock salt or NaCl?

Answer

Rock salt or $NaCl$ in the presence of $MnO _2$ and concentrated $H _2 SO _4$ forms chlorine.

The reaction takes place in two steps.
Step 1 :
$4 NaCl +4 H _2 SO _4 \longrightarrow 4 NaHSO _4+4 HCl$
Step 2 :
$MnO _2+4 HCl \longrightarrow MnCl _2+2 H _2 O + Cl _2$
Final reaction :
$\begin{aligned}
& 4 NaCl + MnO _2+4 H _2 SO _4 \longrightarrow \\
& 4 NaHSO _4+ MnCl _2+2 H _2 O + Cl _2
\end{aligned}$
