Question
How is sulphur dioxide prepared?

Answer

Sulphur dioxide, $SO _2$ is prepared by following methods:
(1) From sulphur: When sulphur is burnt in air or oxygen, $SO _2$ is formed along with $SO _3$.
$S _{( s )}+8 O _{2( g )} \xrightarrow{\Delta} 8 SO _{2( g )}$

(2) Laboratory method (From sulphite):
- Sodium sulphite on treating with dilute $H _2 SO _4$ forms $SO _2$.
\9Na _2 SO _3+ H _2 SO _{4( aq )} \rightarrow Na _2 SO _4+ H _2 O _{(1)}+ SO _{2( g )}$

- Sodium sulphite, $Na _2 SO _3$ on reaction with dilute hydrochloric acid solution forms $SO _2$.
$Na _2 SO _{3( aq )}+2 HCl _{( aq )} \rightarrow 2 NaCl _{9 aq0 }+ H _2 O _{(1)}+ SO _{2( g )}$

(3) Industrial method (From sulphides): It is obtained as a by-product in the roasting of ores of pyrites and blendes.
\94 FeS _{2( s )}+11 O _{2( g )} \xrightarrow{\Delta} 2 Fe _2 O _3+8 SO _2$
Iron pyrites
$2 ZnS +3 O _2 \xrightarrow{\Delta} 2 ZnO +2 SO _2$

zinc blende The gas is dried and liquefied under pressure and stored.
