Before 1984, there were very few laws for the protection or treatment of environment and there was very weak enforcement of these laws. There was no restriction on the pollution of environment by industries.
However after the Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984, the importance of environment was realised and laws were made for its protection. The courts also gave judgements that emphasized the protection of environment under right to life.
