How was penicillin discovered?

Penicillin was an accidental discovery. Alexander Fleming observed that in unwashed culture plates of Staphylococcus; a mould of Penicillium was growing. This mould inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus around it. Later, the antibiotic penicillin was isolated from this fungus.
