How will you measure the length of a pencil using a scale whose $0$ end is broken?

$(1)$ To measure the length of a pencil by the help of a scale whose 0 end is broken we will place one end of the pencil at the mark of $1$ on the scale.
$(2)$ We will note the mark on the scale on which the other end of the pencil falls.
$(3)$ Finally, we will subtract $1$ from the reading and get the real length of the pencil.
