Question
Identify the site for protein synthesis in a cell.
✓
Answer
Protein synthesis is quite interesting. Since the information for the amino acid sequences are derived from the sequence of nucleotides in the m$RNA$ the process is aptly called translation. It is a common knowledge even for students with elementary knowledge of biology that Ribosomes are are sites of protein synthesis. In case of prokaryotes the process is simpler as compared to eucaryotes. In eucaryotes many of the proteins start being synthesised on ribosomes but then the synthesis is halted by association of other regulatory proteins and and the whole machinary with ribosomes and incomplete peptides are taken to endoplasmic reticulum. There the translation resumes and the growing peptide is pushed into the Endoplasmic Reticulum. On completion the peptide moves along the $ER$ to Golgi and then packaged into vescicles to be secreted out. During this journey the protein usually get its required modifications.
