If 8 : x :: 16 : 35, find the value of x.

Answer

Product of the extremes = 8 × 35 = 280
Product of the means = 16 × x = 16x
Since 8 : x :: 16 : 35
We have:
Product of the extremes = product of the means
⇒ 280 = 16x
⇒ x = 17.5
