Increase in carbon dioxide leads to global warming because this gas traps the heat of the sun and does not let all of it to go back into space. So if greenhouse gases increase in the atmosphere/ more than the necessary amount of heat is trapped in the atmosphere, leading to temperature increase above the normal which is known as global warming.
