The upper thin layer on the surface of the earth is called soil (land) in general over which the vegetation usually grows.
The soil is composed of many particles. There are small and large rock material, pebbles,
gravels, clay, silt minute particles, etc. in the lithosphere which is called 'Regolith'.
When organic elements like air and water mix with the 'regolith' it forms 'Land'. With reference to agriculture, the economic development of any nation depends on the quality and the type of soil of it has.
The soils of India are classified into eight types by the Indian Council of Agricultural
Research $(ICAR)$ : $(1)$ Alluvial soil, $(2)$ Red soil, $( 3 )$ Black soil, $(4)$ Laterite soil. $(5 )$ Desert soil. $(6)$ Mountain soil. $(7)$ Forest soil and $(8)$ Marshy (Swampy) soil (Pealy soil).
