MCQ
Mode of DNA replication in E. coli is:
  • A
    Conservative and unidirectional
  • B
    Semi conservative and unidirectional
  • C
    Conservative and bidirectional
  • D
    Semi conservative and bidirectional

Answer

  1. Semi conservative and bidirectional

Explanation:

DNA replication is the process by which the DNA duplicates itself. It is semi-conservative and bidirectional in nature. DNA replication is semiconservative because out of two strands of the daughter DNA one comes from the parent DNA which is also known as the template strand. At the start of the DNA replication, the hydrogen bonds between the nucleotides of two strands break by the action of enzyme helicase.

DNA replication is bidirectional because it takes place in 5'-3' and 3'-5' direction. The DNA is synthesized by DNA polymerase in the 5'-3' direction on leading strand by DNA polymerase. When the DNA polymerase works in the opposite direction on lagging strand it synthesizes discontinuous short DNA segments known as Okazaki in 3'-5' direction.
