In frame shift mutation the reading of the frame of the base sequence shifts laterally either in forward direction due to addition of one or more nucleotides or in backward direction due to deletion of one or more nucleotides. Whereas in base pair substitution a base pair is replaced by another base which results in change of nucleotide sequence.
