The majority of western, central and eastern Europe was made up of peasantry, but they were differ in social composition and ideology.
To the west the bulk of the land was formed by tenants and small owners.
In eastern and central Europe, the pattern of holding was characterized by vast estates cultivated by serfs.
In western Europe, France and parts of Germany, industrialisation grew during the 19th century. Growth of industrial production and trade led to growth of towns. New social classes based on production for the marketoccurred a working class population and middle classes made up of industrialists, businessmen and professionals.
