Similarity between Linga yats and Nayanars:
  1. Both opposed the caste system.
  2. Both condemned the Brahmanical norms like rituals, untouchability, etc.
  3. Both worshipped Lord Shiva.
  4. Both followed sauna bhakti.
Dissimilarity:
  1. Nayanars were not confined to any particular region while the linga yats were popular in Karnataka.
  2. Nayanars worshipped Shiva in both an idol and lingo form whereas Lingayats worshipped only the lingo form.
  3. Lingayats have emerged as a distinct community in Karnataka while Nayanars are found all over South India.
  4. Lingayats wore a small lingo on their shoulder while such a practice doesn't exist among Nayanars.
  5. Nayanars believed in cremating the dead and Lingayats buried their dead.
  6. Lingayats believed that they would unite with Shiva after death.
  7. Lingayatas communicated in Kannada and Nayanars in Tamil.
