On multiplying (1) by 3 and (2) by 1, we get:

On adding (3) and (4), we get:
7x = 35
⇒ x = 5
On substituting the value of x = 5 in (1), we get:
x + y = 3
5 + y = 3
⇒ y = 3 - 5 = -2
$\therefore$ x = 5 and y = -2

On multiplying (1) by 3 and (2) by 1, we get:
